Pioneer Apprentice Camp
July 24 – 28, 2017
Each year, Apprentice Camp is the most anticipated program of the summer at Crab Orchard Museum!
There are 80 apprenticeship positions open, with 40 reserved for girls and 40 for boys.
Registration is first come, first served.
- All apprentices must be ages 8-14.
- Apprentices must have a written permission form signed by a parent or guardian
- Apprentices must dress in period-appropriate costume – the museum has several costumes available on loan, but apprentices may also wear their own costumes.
The apprentice program is the only program in the area where campers will learn gender-related pioneer skills. These activities, which include archery, blacksmithing, candle-making, gardening, hearth cooking, basket-making, and sewing, among others, build communication, collaboration, and leadership skills that will serve apprentices in all other walks of life.
All sessions will begin at 10:00 a.m. and end at 3:00 p.m. There will be a break for lunch each day — apprentices should bring their own ready-to-eat lunches. Drinks and snacks are available at the museum gift shop. On Friday, a potluck picnic lunch followed by a program for apprentices and their families will be held.
The Pioneer Apprentice Program is $175.00 for family members of the museum, and $195.00 for all nonmembers. Nonmembers may obtain a family membership at the rate of $60.00. Please visit our Membership section for more information, or call 276.988.6755.
